Peter Harms, Schiffahrts-u. Speditionsges. mbH was founded in 1982 by Karl Peter Harms. Previously, Mr Harms was managing director of a long-established forwarding company in Bremen. He is both managing director and sole shareholder of Peter Harms Schiffahrts-u. Speditionsges. mbH. We have been a member of the Verein Bremer Spediteure since the company was founded.
The company moved from its first headquarters in Mr Harm’s home to two rented rooms in the office block at “Am Dobben 18”, Bremen city centre, in August 1984. Ongoing expansion made it possible to purchase and renovate the entire building in August 1993; our company now occupies two floors.
The number of people employed by the company has risen steadily since its founding. Nearly all our employees began their professional careers as apprentices in the company, most of them being taken on in permanent positions at the end of their training. Today’s youthful team of 17 employees produced a turnover last year of approximately EURO 9 million. Two couriers are also employed by the company on a daily basis for exchanging documents with the shipping companies in the city centre and for the fastest possible forwarding of original documentation.
Our focus is on global container shipping. We offer one-stop provision for the entire transport chain – pre-carriage, terminal handling, shipping and on-carriage ex works / free buyer’s address, or as stipulated in the delivery terms agreed. Depending on customer requirements and the place of loading, we select the most economical transport route with loading on board at the North German ports of Bremen, Bremerhaven and Hamburg or the western ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp. Naturally, our service includes export customs clearance and the issue of the bill of lading in accordance with the contents of the letter of credit. Thanks to state-of-the-art computer technology, we are linked to the port systems of the customs authorities and handling companies in Bremen, Bremerhaven and Hamburg, thus guaranteeing smooth in-port operations via ZAPP or BHT. For loading via the western ports we have years of experience co-operating with professional customs declarants to avoid any potential problems during customs clearance. Currently our consignments mainly consist of recycling sector products, timber and paper. We also act as a foodstuffs forwarding agent for a number of leading companies.
Our aim is to keep pace consistently with the latest developments. To this end, our employees regularly travel to recipient countries such as Benin, Ghana, Togo, Cameroon, Kenya, USA, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan or India to ensure we remain informed about any changes. Furthermore, we regard the continual updating of our office technology a top priority, allowing us to derive maximum benefit from sophisticated computer technology to simplify and improve daily processes, which thus benefits our customers as well. A special order system for our customers is currently in development; customers will be able to place orders directly online or by installing a free of charge, in-house software.
